About TimberLimbo

TimberLimbo is an interactive text choice exploration game that follows an unnamed main character who wakes up in a foggy forest with no knowledge of who they are or how they got there. While exploring the woods, they come across three talking animals—a rabbit, a bird, and a deer—who each need help with their predicaments, but it is up to the player whether or not to help them.

As my very first game ever, TimberLimbo's concept was one I had in my mind for a very long time that I wanted to see come to life. Being able to tell this story in Twine's format was perfect fit for what I wanted for this story, especially as a fan of choose your own adventure-styled games. This story can be experienced by the player down one of seven interwoven routes.

What I Did on this Project

  • Crafting branching paths in Google Docs and Twine

  • Coding with CSS and HTML to deepen the player experience through motion and color for the text and background

  • Composed and edited all dialogue (21 pages total; Writing Excerpts Here)

  • Kept track of progress to effectively make use of my time (resulted in game being made in 8 days)

  • Set up playtests to make sure mechanics functioned properly and text was easy to read

What Makes TimberLimbo Unique

Well, this is my first game ever after all! It's unique simply for that fact, but also for being the fast game I've ever made that is so complicated narrative-wise as this. 21 pages of story being conceived, written, programmed, and designed in a functional game in 8 days is an amazing feat on its own. While it didn't have visuals or audio at the time, it would inspire me advance my game dev experience in my next Twine game, Recharge.

Learning and Growing

Through the creation of TimberLimbo, I learned the biggest lesson of all: how to make my very first game! It is also here where I tried my hand with coding for the first time (CSS mostly), and with this knowledge, I was a little more prepared for what was to come in my Code Coven Introduction to Game Making course. It also became an exercise of diversifying my choice text usage with my writing. Overall, TimberLimbo was my push into the video game world, and I wouldn't change a thing about it!
